Legal highs now illegal on the IoM

Island follows the UK in legal high ban

There's now a 'blanket ban' on legal highs on the Isle of Man - as Treasury makes a move to follow the UK's lead.

A legal order was made against importing, exporting, production, possession, and possession with intent to supply psychoactive substances.

The department says it's made the move to 'protect the community from the importation of harmful substances'.

The Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 (Application) Order comes into effect on 18 August.

The prohibition was applied in the UK last week - which sees offenders facing sentences of up to seven years in prison.

It includes drugs such as nitrous oxide, salvia, synthetic cannabinoids - like Spice, and some weak stimulants.

As expected, alcohol - now the only legal intoxicant -, nicotine products and caffeine are excluded from the list.

More details can be found on the Customs and Excise website.
