LegCo referendum bid unsuccessful

Motion fails by 20 votes to eight

An MHK has failed in his attempt to allow the Manx public to decide whether or not members of the Legislative Council should be popularly elected.

South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey called for a referendum to be held on the issue on the same day as the Manx general election in September.

In Tynwald today (17 Feb) Mr Malarkey acknowledged there had been many unsuccessful attempts to reform the upper house and that a referendum could settle the matter once and for all.

However, his motion failed by 20 votes to eight.
