Living wage plans pass parliamentary hurdle

New Bishop backs proposals

Plans for the Isle of Man's first ever national living wage look set to get the go ahead.

 

Tynwald unanimously agreed to receive a report on the proposals when it sat yesterday (17 Oct).

 

A non-mandatory rate of £8.61 per hour - six pence higher than the standard UK living wage, and £1.11 above the current Manx minimum wage - is being put forward.

 

It's calculated based on the cost of basic needs and a 'decent' standard of living for Island residents.

 

During his first appearance in Tynwald last night, the Island's new Lord Bishop Peter Eagles spoke during the debate on the voluntary living wage.

The Bishop told the court he felt privileged to speak on an issue which affects the worst off in society:
