Local authorities prepare for extra work load

 

Local authorities large and small across the Island are due to take on a raft of new responsibilites from tomorrow.

Jobs such as hedge cutting, road sweeping and verge trimming are being passed down to local commissioners from central government.  

The new system is due to come into force on 1 April, although not all local authorities have signed the deed of transfer which makes the change official. 

Infrastructure minister Phil Gawne has held protracted talks with authorities over providing the extra services from existing budgets.

He says the change makes sense all round - as it will save the tax payer money and not cost the rate-payer any more:
