Loss of free travel signalled after bendy buses ruled out

 

The man who led the trial of bendy buses in the Island is calling for an honest public debate about where the leisure department can find large savings.

Brendan O'Friel's report - concluding the articulated vehicles are not suitable for Manx roads - is now with the Council of Ministers.

It says costly changes would be needed such as creating longer bus stops and laybys, bigger turning circles and re designing tight corners.

The bill for that would outweigh hoped-for savings of more than £3 million by replacing some of the current fleet with larger bendy buses.

Mr O'Friel says charges may now be inevitable for some users who currently enjoy free travel - such as school children:
