Man arrested for breaching Covid regulations

30-year-old went on trip to UK without government letter allowing him back

A Douglas man who went on a trip to the UK was arrested when he landed at the airport – because he didn't have a government letter allowing him back onto the Island.

Thirty-year-old Steven Wesley Johnston of Tynwald Road in Douglas appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to breaching the Island’s coronavirus regulations and possessing cocaine.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain said Johnston was caught with 0.3 grammes of the class A drug on Cushag Road in Anagh Coar on 6 May.

The court heard Johnston was then arrested on 26 June when he arrived at Ronaldsway Airport from Liverpool.

He told staff he didn't have an exemption certificate which travellers need to enter the Isle of Man, and he later refused to tell police where he'd been or why.

Magistrates told him the Island was fortunate to be free of coronavirus, and warned him that situation might no continue if people travel irresponsibly.

They sent him to prison for a total of 21 days, also order him to pay £125 towards prosecution costs.
