Man drunk in charge of car avoids driving ban

Court told he relies on it for work and hobbies

An Onchan man found drunk in charge of his car in a car park has avoided a driving ban.

Twenty-nine-year-old Steven Bradley Underwood, of Royal Avenue West, today pleaded guilty to the offence.

He was found asleep in his car, with the engine running, by police on the eighth floor of Chester Street car park in Douglas in the early hours of July 29.

A test back at police headquarters found he was more than two times the legal limit.

Underwood's advocate Jim Travers urged Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to not ban his client from driving, as he relied on his car for work with a trust company and his main hobby of hockey.

The court heard it was Underwood's first offence.

Ms Hughes endorsed his licence with 10 points and ordered Underwood to pay a £700 fine, plus £280 costs.
