Man jailed for breaching Covid restrictions twice

Six weeks in jail for 48-year-old from Ramsey

A Ramsey man’s been jailed after breaching the Island’s coronavirus restrictions for the second time.

Forty-eight-year-old Justin Christopher Hughes of Parsonage Road appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to breaking lockdown laws between 17 January and 2 February.

Prosecution advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court Hughes was jailed last September for breaking self-isolation laws.

Hughes travelled from the UK to the Isle of Man on 17 January, sailing on the Ben My Chree from Heysham.

He was told to self-isolate, and went back to his home – but when police went to his home to check on him, another man answered the door.

Hughes, who represented himself in court, said he’d tried to obey the rules and didn’t want to go back to prison.

Magistrates said he’d risked the well-being of others, and sent to him to jail for six weeks.
