Manx Gas distances itself from 'carbon neutral' campaign

Claims criticised for 'misleading the Manx public'

Manx Gas has distanced itself from 'carbon neutral' claims made earlier this year.

In June, the energy provider claimed the carbon produced by burning the fossil fuel will be offset by so-called 'credits' - a campaign some claimed was 'greenwashing'.

Jon Curtis, a local businessman attending the COP26 Climate Talks, says the claims were untrue and brought the matter to Government - though he was disappointed by their response:

Now, with a new CEO at the helm of Islands Energy Group, the company says it's working on a new strategy to improve its sustainable credentials.

In a statement to Manx Radio, Jo Cox said: “Part of our long-term vision for the Islands Energy Group and our gas supply businesses in the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey, is to improve their sustainability, lessen their environmental impact and ensure they have a place in the future energy sector. We are fully committed to this course of action and are about to engage with environmental consultancy ESI Monitor to help map out our future plans.

"The ‘Carbon Neutral’ campaign from earlier this year focused on one small part of this equation, carbon offsetting. While carbon offsetting can be part of an effective environment strategy the campaign itself does not fully reflect our new strategy for improving our sustainable credentials. It is not currently in use and we do not plan to revisit it.

"We are really looking forward to working with ESI Monitor and to making a real, lasting change to our business.”
