Manx Labour Party calls for direct democracy

Claims representative system failing

The Manx Labour Party is calling for the public to have a greater input on major political decisions, through the introduction of direct democracy.

At a meeting this month members passed a resolution, proposing a system whereby if one seventh of the population petition Tynwald, a public vote can be held on a particular issue.

The MLP's Election Strategy Coordinator Leo Cussons says the party is now looking to build interest via road shows, meetings, and engagement with other political groups.

He's concerned the results of the last general election show the representative system is failing.

The party's next meeting will be held on June 14.
