MHK behind Safe Access Zones Bill says other Keys members 'very rude' during legislative process

Michelle Haywood's Private Member's Bill further adjourned

It won't be until the next administration before the clauses of the Safe Access Zones and Protected Public Places Bill are read.

Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood's Private Member's Bill aims to establish 150-metre safe zones around abortion service providers, medical premises, and research facilities to prevent harassment of users and staff, alongside creating public space protection orders.

It had its second reading in late 2024 and in the House of Keys this week members voted to adjourn consideration of its clauses until the autumn.

In order for Dr Haywood to reintroduce it into the branches, she would need to obtain a super majority (at least 16 MHKs) in order to bring it back during this administration.

Failure to do so would see the bill effectively evaporate.

During the discussion, one member, Julie Edge MHK, referred to it as “toytown legislation.”
