Minister sceptical over climate change strategy

Emissions not currently reducing

Targets set out in the Island's climate change mitigation strategy for cutting carbon emissions may be unrealistic, according to the Environment Food and Agriculture Minister.

Two years ago Tynwald set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

Geoffrey Boot MHK says currently emissions aren't reducing, and the bulk of the Island's power will continue to come from fossil fuels for at least the next ten years.

Small government initiatives to encourage electric vehicle use and create energy efficient homes have been undertaken recently.

Mr Boot says Tynwald's targets are tough to achieve at present, but that may change:
