MNH to discuss revised plans for new welcome hub ahead of seeking approval

Laxey Wheel plans pulled by heritage organisation

Revised plans for new visitor facilities at the Laxey Wheel will be discussed with ‘stakeholders’ prior to being resubmitted for planning approval.

It comes after Manx National Heritage pulled its original proposals for a ‘welcome hub’ at the tourist attraction.

They’d been heavily criticised; one Manx historian had described the kiosk design, at the Mines Road site, as ‘dreadful’.

MNH says its decision to look again at the design follows a meeting with the planning officer prior to Christmas.

It adds the use of similar ‘modern structures’ is commonplace at heritage sites across the UK, and further afield, and would be affordable, low maintenance and contemporary.

“Well-travelled visitors are accustomed to, and expect high levels of service, access to information and visitor facilities which include retail opportunities. Welcome Hubs of this nature have become a vital component in providing access to heritage sites whilst ensuring a focus on the needs of the modern-day visitor.” – Manx National Heritage

A new welcome hub would be paid for by charitable funds and would be introduced when repairs to the Laxey Wheel’s rod duct and t-rocker are completed.

It brings the total investment in conservation and repairs at the site to £1.6 million over the last three years.
