Figures published in response to FOI request

More than £3million has been overpaid to government employees through their salary over the past five years.

The figures, published in response to a Freedom of Information request, date from April 2020 to March 2025.

There have been a total of 2,422 overpayments in that time.

The latest financial year (24/25) saw the fewest overpayments in a single year at 320.

Policy states: 'Where a person receives and retains an overpayment, even by Government's own mistake, that person is under obligation to make restoration of the full amount.

'All employees should always check their payslip.

'Any employee who suspects that he or she has received an overpayment should contact Payroll in the first instance with a view to repay the amount overpaid immediately.'

The Cabinet Office, in its response, says the reason for overpayment is held, however 'there are a number of reasons why overpayments occur'.

'These include late notification of leaving, late notification of contractual changes, incorrect information provided to payroll and the reclamation of training expenses.'
