Murder investigation underway on IoM registered ship

Captain killed on containership in Colombia

An investigation is underway following the murder of a captain onboard a container ship in Colombia, registered in the Isle of Man.

According to gcaptain.com, the manager of the MV Spirit of Hamburg has confirmed the incident, which took place last Thursday.

A statement from the ship's owners said a seafarer had been killed by an intruder, however some media outlets are suggesting the captain was killed by members of his own crew.

The Isle of Man Shipping Registry has passed its condolences to Captain Myo Tun Zaw's family.

In a statement issued last Monday, Zeaborn Ship Management wrote: "a seafarer of its managed container vessel Spirit of Hamburg has suffered fatal injuries following what is belived to a violent incident with an intruder onboard the ship in the port of Cartagena, Colombia."

Meanwhile, Colombian media have been reporting the captain was killed by members of his own crew.

The Isle of Man shipping registry has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
