New owners of the Castle Mona revealed

Historic site sold for £1.21m

The identity of the new owners of the Castle Mona Hotel in Douglas has been revealed.

Following reports in the media, it's been confirmed The Tevir Group has purchased the historic building from The Sefton Group PLC for £1.21 million.

A statement released by the new owners says it 'respects the historical significance' of the site and has already begun 'emergency repairs'.

As well as the Castle Mona - which has been empty since closing 12 years ago - the group has also announced the purchase of the former Zurich House in Athol Street.

Built in 1801 as a home for the Duke of Athol, a former governor of the Isle of Man, the property was turned into a 98-bedroom hotel in 1835 after his death.

A previously agreed sale of the Castle Mona fell through in April this year, according to the Sefton Group.

However, the seafront building was then sold at auction in May after considerable interest, with the successful bidders remaining unknown to the public.

Auctioneers Lambert Smith Hampton said there were 'around 70 bidders' for the Douglas hotel.

The new owners have stated their current priority is to prevent any further deterioration to the site which has been derelict since 2006.

In regards to the purchase of the former Zurich House, The Tevir Group says 'arrangements are already well advanced' when it comes to finding new tenants for the property.
