New vehicle licensing system

The Department of Transport is to streamline the way we register and licence our motor vehicles.

From May, data given by customers at Post Office counters will be entered into a new computer database - allowing licences to be printed automatically in future.

John Moss reports:

At present, vehicle data is entered into the system manually - and until now details have had to be written on licences by hand.

Under the new system - scheduled to go live in May - the licence data-base will be updated automatically when we apply for a licence, and discs will be printed out.

The new system is designed to allow future development of on-line facilities.

From yesterday licensing services are no longer available at Onchan Commissioners or the Manx Fish Producers Organisation in Peel which have acted as agents for the department for many years.

In addition to post offices, Tarlton Hodgson, and RC Teare's Insurance Agents will continue to issue licenses until the new system is introduced in May.
