It's the second phase of the local authority's replacement scheme

Onchan Commissioners will be petitioning the government for £897,245 to refurbish street lighting across two of the village's housing estates.

The local authority will be replacing 151 columns which are deemed no longer safe, a potential fire and electrocution hazard or have exposed wiring.

It could mean an additional 11 pence on next year's rates, but some streetlights from the 1970s are still in use - these do not meet current standards and guidelines.

The roads included in this phase are Birch Hill Close, Birch Hill Crescent, Briarfield Avenue, Cronk Avenue, Highfield Close, Highfield Crescent, Hillcrest Grove, Hollydene Avenue, Ivydene Avenue, Laurel Avenue, Rosedene Avenue, Rosedene Close, Seafield Close, Hazel Close, Seafield Crescent, Sunnybank Avenue, Willow Close, Maple Avenue, Maple Close, Hawthorn Close, Clypse View, Hillberry View, Poplar Close, Oak Close, Sycamore Close, Beech Avenue and Beech Close.

Chair Anthony Allen says the financial impact has been 'considered carefully' and buying in bulk is the best value option for ratepayers.

Local Democracy Reporter Emma Draper has been speaking to him:

The commissioners believe it will save an additional £2,026.74 per year once the scheme is complete.

It's hoping to start the scheme next April, if the petition is approved by the government.
