Onchan man leads police to drugs after reporting burglary

31-year-old admits possessing cannabis with intent to supply

An Onchan man who called police to report a burglary at his property inadvertently led officers to his own stash of cannabis.

Craig Alan McClurey, of Royal Court, phoned for help just before 3am on 29 October telling officers men had broken in and taken a package of drugs.

The 31-year-old explained that he was in debt to them - when officers arrived they located 13.5 grams of cannabis with a street value of £270 within the property.

McClurey admitted possessing the drugs with intent to supply - during sentencing at Douglas Courthouse his advocate told the court he was selling drugs to fund his own habit.

"He’s only before the court because he called the police and led them to his cannabis", the advocate added.

Ordering him to do 120 hours of community service, and pay £125 in prosecution costs, High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told McClurey supplying others to fund his own habit would cause a ‘spiral’.

"It’s a vicious cycle and you need to get out of it", she added.

McClurey will also have to undertake two years of probation supervision.
