One World Centre: Refugees need 'stability'

Commitment of six months required from people who can offer shelter

People who wish to open their doors to Ukrainian refugees need to 'carefully consider' whether they can commit to hosting them for an 'indefinite period'.

The Ukraine Relief Committee is looking at the possibility of offering a humanitarian pathway which would enable islanders to sponsor those fleeing conflict.

The One World Centre says refugees need 'stability' so it's likely the commitment would need to be for at least six months.

Spokesperson Wendy Shimmin said, "We're all aware of the distressing scenes coming from Ukraine as a result of the conflict and it is clear that more humanitarian help is needed.

"The potential opportunity to provide a sponsorship scheme to the Island and welcome families into the Manx community is good news and a great step forward by government.

"We know that many people are keen to help. Those interested need to carefully consider what it means to welcome someone into their home for an indefinite period.

"It is important to provide stability for these families so it's likely that the commitment will need to be for at least six months in the first instance."

At the moment only Ukrainian nationals with a family member living on the Island can apply for a visa to come to the Island – so far seven potential applications have been received.

In the meantime residents are encouraged to continue donating to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
