Open verdict at resumed inquest

A 27-year-old man with a history of mental illness died from multiple injuries, hours after asking to be admitted to a specialist unit, an inquest was told today.

Andrew Piekalns passed away in Noble’s Hospital in December, a day after falling from the window of a house in Christian Road, Douglas.

The inquest heard Mr Piekalns was a 'very vulnerable young man' who had severe mental health problems caused by bi-polar disorder, as well as problems with gambling and drug use.

Coroner Michael Moyle said it was unclear whether Mr Piekalns had intended to take his own life and recorded an open verdict.

There was no suggestion Mr Piekalns had not received proper care from health professionals and his family prior to his death.
