Payday loans views sought by OFT

Island residents who've taken out payday loans are being asked for their views by the Office of Fair Trading.

The OFT's launched an online survey amid growing concern over the way moneylending firms operate.

Typically, they target people whose incomes are squeezed at the end of the month, giving short-term, unsecured cash loans, usually at high rates of interest.

A recent report by the UK OFT found serious problems with the payday market, citing widespread breaches of the law which it said led to 'misery and hardship' for many borrowers.

The Island's OFT wants to find out if there's a similar problem here.

Chief Officer Mike Ball says the survey's not about the rights and wrongs of payday loans but how they operate: (play audio)
