Police defend actions as RTC leads to traffic jam

Priorities are to deal with injuries and crash scene

Police are defending the actions of emergency services after yesterday's (Dec 11) traffic jam on the Archallagan Road.

Sergeant Gavin Callow has said priorities are always to save life, give first aid, and protect the scene - not to talk to drivers as officers attempt to redirect traffic.

He adds that the narrow road isn't the most reliably free-flowing at the best of times.

It follows criticism of the way they handled busy roads following an accident in Crosby that blocked the road during rush hour.

Aggravation at how the situation was managed was heightened due to the closure of Foxdale Road, which - if it had been open - would have eased the problem.

It left remaining routes to Peel limited - as people stuck in stationary traffic looked to go up the Mountain to Brandywell, or south via the Roundtable.
