Police ready for number plate recognition

Legislative requirements for a trial now in place

Number plate recognition technology will be used by police to catch drivers of un-taxed UK registered cars on Manx roads this summer.

The Home Affairs Minister released details of a pilot scheme to expedite the process of identifying people contravening the law in the House of Keys today (Tue).

Legislative requirements for the trial are now in place - which will run until the end of the year - the department will then decide if it's to become a permanent fixture.

It's expected to become routine by the end of the year, extending the use of the devices into patrol vehicles is subject to the trial's success.
