Probation for Douglas man found drunk and incapable

Advocate tells court: "Sometimes things just get too much"

A Douglas man has been instructed to work with the probation service after being found drunk and incapable of looking after himself.

Officers found Gary Wilson, of Christian Road, sitting on a cold and damp footpath in Peel on 12 March.

At Douglas Courthouse the 64-year-old admitted the offence with the prosecutor telling the court it was ‘somewhat of a sad case’ adding: “He was totally incapable of maintaining his own balance.”

Wilson’s advocate acknowledged that his client was the subject of a probation order, and conditional discharge, at the time of committing the offence but said he was suffering from health issues.

“Sometimes things just get too much,” he told the court. “He’s finding coping extremely difficult. He knows that doesn’t excuse his behaviour.”

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes revoked the previous probation order and imposed a new nine-month order telling Wilson: “You clearly were so drunk you couldn’t look after yourself.”

He was also instructed to pay prosecution costs of £125.
