Surveying work due to take place today will enable DoI to finalise design

It's hoped the reconstruction of Port St Mary High Street will get underway next spring.

Surveying work to map the layout of the infrastructure beneath the road surface gets underway today.

The area's local authority has campaigned for years for the road to be rebuilt, while Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood previously planted daffodils in the highway's potholes to highlight the condition of the route.

Having since been appointed as infrastructure minister, Dr Haywood says this is the final stage before her department can approach Treasury for funding:

Port St Mary High Street will be closed from 6am until 6pm today while the radar survey is carried out.

Meanwhile, these Port St Mary residents told Manx Radio it's 'about time' this work took place:

If the weather conditions mean the surveying work can't be completed, contingency dates are available today and tomorrow.

Traffic will be diverted at Athol Place during the closure, with parking suspended on Queens Place during the closure to ensure access for buses.

Minister Haywood says the full reconstruction will likely take between five and six months, and the road will need to be closed for the entirety of the scheme.
