Public safety key driver in HGV regulations

RTLC backs introduction of proposed new rules

Public safety is a key driver in the bid to have heavy goods vehicles in the Island more strictly regulated - according to a regulatory body.

New rules, aimed at addressing the roadworthiness of HGVs, could require drivers to carry out daily visual checks of their vehicles.

The Island Road Transport Association has questioned the need for the regulations, which are due to be debated by Tynwald this week.

But chair of the Road Transport Licensing Committee Brendan O'Friel says a formal system of checking of the roadworthiness of the vehicles is long overdue.
