4.4 per cent of allowable catch brought ashore
The Island's Scallop season has got off to a brisk start with over 50 tonne of the shellfish landed in the first two weeks.
The figure represents 4.4 per cent of the total allowable catch of 1,142 tonne. This will be reviewed by the Scallop Management board when the trawl catch reaches 818 tonne.
The fishing industry is enjoying something of a renaissance after a successful King Scallop season and the introduction of a new quota for herring, which means local boats can fish commercially for viable quantities for the first time in a quarter of a century.
The initial quota of 100 tonne could quadruple over the next three years.
