Hole found in the deck caused by rotting timbers
Ramsey Swing Bridge is likely to remain closed to vehicles until at least the middle of the Summer.
The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that the closure follows the discovery of a hole in the deck of the causeway at the northern approach to the bridge caused by rotting timbers.
The bridge will continue to be available to pedestrian and cycle traffic, and will operate as normal to enable access and exit for vessels using Ramsey's Inner Harbour.
It's been assessed that while the structure can safely bear the weight of pedestrian traffic it would be unsafe to allow vehicles to run over the surface.
Work is taking place on designing a solution that's sympathetic to the age of the bridge and for repairs to match original materials.
Unfortunately it's impractical and unsafe to re-open the bridge for vehicular traffic until the work is undertaken. The DoI thanks drivers for their continued patience.
