'Really special', says charity as historic furniture returns to Island

Charles Rennie Mackintosh sideboard on display at Knockaloe

A charity has said it's 'really special' that a historical piece of furniture has returned to the Island. 

The Centre for WW1 Internment at Knockaloe has been donated a sideboard designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, that was built in the camp. 

It was crafted by Charles Matt, an internee who set up a workshop while stationed on the Island as part of a commission by Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke.

The sideboard was then brought back to the Isle of Man after Mr Matt's granddaughter donated it to the museum.

A historically significant piece, the sideboard has previously been displayed at world-renowned museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
