'Refocus' for Ukrainian hosting scheme due to ‘decreasing demand’

Claims for host payment must be made by 31 March

Tynwald has voted in favour of refocussing a support scheme designed to help Ukrainian people who’ve fled conflict due to ‘decreasing demand’.

The Isle of Man Homes for Ukraine Scheme is closing applications for new hosts from 1 April; anyone who applies before that date can claim a host payment of up to £4,320.

The Cabinet Office says the number of people coming to the Island seeking refuge, and the number of hosts claiming, has ‘reduced significantly’ since war broke out just over a year ago.

People hosting Ukrainians after 1 April, who haven’t applied for host payment, will still be able to seek government’s help with things like safeguarding, DBS checks and signposting.

But Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse questioned Minister Kate Lord-Brennan on whether the timing was right:
