Reform on the cards for welfare system

Tynwald to vote on proposals later this month

A new, single Manx state benefit could be brought in as part of a wave of reforms to the Island's welfare system.

The payment would replace a number of existing benefits, such as Jobseeker's Allowance and Income Support.

The changes are among a raft of proposals unveiled yesterday by Treasury Minister Eddie Teare, and will go to a Tynwald vote later this month.

A single-tier pension of around £180 per week for longer working is also proposed, along with the phasing-out of the Manx pension supplement. 

The move follows predictions the Island's National Insurance fund will dry up unless the welfare system is reformed.
