Rumours there are plans to relocate Martin Ward onto specialist EMI unit

The families of dementia patients currently being cared for in the north of the Island are urging Manx Care to ‘think seriously’ about the impact of moving them.

It follows concerns there may be plans in place to relocate residents from the Elderly Mentally Infirm unit at the Reayrt Skyal residential care home in Ramsey.

Manx Radio understands it’s been suggested that the Martin Ward - previously located at Ramsey District Cottage Hospital - could then move there.

It's understood letters are due to be sent to relatives to explain the position.

Eric Corkish is a Ramsey Commissioner:

Tina Jauncey and Phil Penketh both have relatives with dementia in the unit.

They've told Manx Radio they've sought to get clarification on the rumours they've heard and believe relocation is one of four plans being considered:

"I do see my mum most days. If she moves and I can't do that then what effect is that going to have on her? What effect is it going to have on me?" - Tina Jauncey (Relative)

On Thursday (11 June) Phil and Tina are planning to meet with representatives from government but, in the meantime, they have this message for Manx Care and the Department of Health and Social Care:

"It's not just about the people that are there now. It's about the people that's going to need these units in the future." - Phil Penketh (Relative)

Manx Radio has contacted Manx Care and the Department of Health and Social Care for comment.

In response Manx Care said: “We have arranged a meeting with families in the coming days specifically to discuss these matters, listen to their views and provide accurate information about the options under consideration.

"It would not be appropriate to respond to speculation or partial information through the media before those conversations have taken place.

"No final decisions have been made.

"Our priority is to engage directly and respectfully with residents, families and staff and we remain committed to keeping them informed throughout the process.”
