Remand for man who 'smashed up' mother's home with axe

32-year-old will be sentenced next year

A man who ‘smashed up’ his mother’s home with an axe has been remanded at the Isle of Man Prison.

Ryan Kneen, of no fixed address, admitted damaging property and resisting a police officer in the execution of their duty during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The court heard two emergency calls were made, just before 2am on 6 November, but both were ‘dropped’; they were traced and police attended a property in Braddan where they’d originated.

The house was in darkness and when Kneen’s mother answered the door she confirmed to officers that her son had caused damage to the walls and a plug which had cut the electricity supply.

Firearms officers were dispatched to try and locate the 32-year-old - when they went to arrest him Kneen became ‘violent and aggressive’ and started banging his head against the police van.

Kneen’s advocate told the court the value of the damage was low but added: “I don’t dispute that it wasn’t distressing for his mother.”

Admitting he had ‘significant concerns’ about his client’s mental health he added: “He has no memory of these incidents.”

A social enquiry report has been requested before Kneen is sentenced and he’ll next appear in court on 19 January.

Magistrates told him: “Obviously you do need some help and hopefully you will receive it.”

Two charges of theft, from October 2022, were withdrawn.
