Nine recommendations made by independent reviewer
An independent rapid review of overall bed capacity within Noble’s Hospital has found evidence of 'complex issues such as trust, discretionary behaviours, questionable consultant job plans, silo-planning and circumvention of normal governance systems'.
The review was commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in response to the Hospital Medical Committee’s request to increase inpatient beds in Nobles Hospital back in March.

Manx Radio is currently reading the report, but in a statement, a government spokesperson said: "The overall recommendation from the review is that the addition of beds without other supportive changes would not resolve the long-term health and social care needs of the Island’s population, and that the primary goal should be to strengthen processes and procedures.
"Improving public awareness of services to help the public access the right care, at the right place, at the right time was also raised during the review, and the DHSC is committed to supporting Manx Care in providing clear information to help people access the services they need.
Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian added: ‘My Department and I committed to a review of bed capacity and insisted the work was progressed at pace and with clear focus. This has been an important step in taking ownership of the challenges we face and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed, alongside the collaboration of a small working group.
‘The rapid review has provided an independent perspective on how the Island can make more effective use of its resources, including bed capacity and utilisation. Its findings will inform both the Department’s longer-term work to support Manx Care and the immediate actions needed to address current pressures.
‘There is no single solution, but through strong leadership, partnership working and the dedication of our exceptional frontline staff, we are taking decisive action to deliver the improvements our community deserves. The review provides valuable assurance to guide both immediate next steps and the development of a longer-term strategy to meet demand across our health and care system.
‘We look forward to collaborating with Manx Care in progressing the opportunities identified and ensuring the continued delivery of safe, high-quality health and social care services that meet the needs of our island.’
