Road works resume at Island's busiest junction

Major road works on a key route in Douglas are due to resume after a break for the Manx Grand Prix.

A nine week scheme to replace road surfaces and pavements on New Castletown Road between Quarterbridge and Saddle Road was halted during the festival fortnight. During the work contractors discovered parts of the carriageway needed to be completely reconstructed as the road foundations had failed.

A new 10 day phase begins on Monday 3 September with a one-way southbound system in place, and requires the junction at Saddle Road to be completely closed.

Drivers heading into Douglas from the south should divert via Cooil Road and Vicarage Road or use Kewaigue Hill or the Old Castletown Road to reach the capital.

When that's completed, a second 10 day phase of work will begin. The Saddle Road junction will re open and two-way traffic will be allowed, controlled by lights.
