Roads very treacherous in places

'Take it easy' was very much the message from police to motorists and pedestrians this morning (Monday), as people attempted to get into work following the severe ice and snow at the weekend.

There was widespread severe frost overnight, freezing very hard everywhere, with temperatures down to between minus 4 and minus 9 Celsius in places.

Police are pointing out the salt and grit becomes less effective at minus 5 and virtually ineffective below minus 7.

Gritting teams worked through the night, and although most of the main roads were passable, extra care was needed on the side and estate roads, many of which hadn't been treated.

Seven teams spent time refilling salt bins, and clearing footways outside doctors' surgeries, churches and nursing homes.

Most of the main roads were open from first thing this morning, but Peel Road was causing concern on the approach to Douglas, after Quarterbridge, with ice patches and fresh snow.

The Old Castletown Road was potentially hazardous, particularly where fresh snow had fallen around South Quay.

Most roads in the north were said to be passable with care, but there were many, potentially trecherous ice patches.

In Peel and the west of the Island, the roads were quite slushy and there was a risk the slush on routes on higher grond could freeze. The same applied in the south.

There is also a possibility of a few hail or snow showers today (Monday), the highest risk being in the west and south of the Island.
