Scotland's First Minister lays wreath at Solway memorial

The First Minister of Scotland has recognised the part played by the Isle of Man in bringing the crew of the ill-fated Solway Harvester back to their families.

Alex Salmond was taken to the Douglas Head memorial at the start of his two day visit here (16 July).

Both Mr Salmond and Chief Minister Allan Bell laid wreaths, recognising the loss of the Solway's seven man crew in heavy seas off the Isle of Man in January 2000 - and the £1 million spent by the Manx government to raise the vessel and retrieve the bodies from the wreck of the Harvester.

After talks with Allan Bell, Mr Salmond will deliver the Chief Minister's International Lecture at the Villa Marina this evening.

Tomorrow Mr Salmond will visit the traditional birthplace of Manx democracy Tynwald Hill at St John's. He will also call in on the Bunscoill to see how Manx language teaching is flourishing.
