Children's Centre comments on closures

The chief executive of The Children's Centre says it doesn't exist to compete with commercial businesses.

Fiona Dawson was speaking after it was announced the centre plans to withdraw early years services from 23 March, with its Family Placement Service closing in October.

The decision follows an 'in-depth review' over the last 18 months and the move means up to 20 of the charity's staff are set to lose their jobs.

Mrs Dawson denies the move was driven by the loss of a major government contract in 2014:
