Sheep attacked by dogs in Lezayre

MNFU issues reminder to farmers

A farmer in Lezayre came across dogs attacking his sheep earlier today.

He described the dogs as large springer-type breed, one was liver and white in colour with a red collar and the second was a darker colour, possibly with patches of black or dark tan.

The Manx National Farmers' Union has released a statement about the latest incident.

It says the farmer was unable to catch the dogs, and as he approached them they acted aggressively and then ran off in the direction of the Garey Ford.

He then began the process of trying to round up the sheep and assess them for injuries - he was able to catch the one pictured on this story as it couldn’t run away.

MNFU President Tim Johnston is reminding all farmers they are only legally allowed to shoot a dog if they catch it in the act of attacking or worrying their livestock.

Before you shoot the dog, however, you must make every reasonable attempt to catch it.

Officers from the Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team are appealing for anyone who has information about this incident to come forward.

Call Ramsey Police Station on 812234 if you do know anything.
