Storm clear up underway as damage assessed

Trees and walls down around the Island

With the clean-up operation following Storm Barra well underway, the scale of the damage is being assessed.

Initial reports suggest things could have been worse, but there are some areas of concern.

It was an incredibly busy day for the emergency services, Civil Defence and the DoI Highways teams, who responded to around sixty instances of trees or large branches blocking roads.

DoI structural engineers are inspecting the damaged seawall at Mooragh Promenade, Ramsey, which will remain closed while they determine a way forward.

Elsewhere a wall was damaged at Fort Island in Derbyhaven, and a large tree which came down in Second Avenue, Douglas will have to be taken apart in sections using a hydraulic lift - the road remains closed.

The damage to the roof at the main terminal building at the airport is also being assessed. The road at the front of the building remains closed, although the flights are operating normally.

Elsewhere, the roof was blown off a property on Old Laxey Hill and damage was sustained to the flat roof of the victory cafe  at The Bungalow, though the facility is open as normal.

A spokesman for Tower Insurance said relatively few claims had been lodged in respect of damage to property, though the true scale of the problem wouldn't be known for a few days.
