Student Awards Inquiry seeks written submissions

Eligibility for the scheme is governed by residency, academic achievement and parental income

The Public Accounts Committee is seeking written submissions as part of its enquiry into the government's Student Awards Scheme.

The committee is examining to what extent the current scheme provides value for money and supports the Island Plan's aims and objectives in respect of higher education.

The scheme is operated by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture and has undergone significant changes from a largely grants based system to a grants and loan mix.

Eligibility for the scheme is governed by residency, academic achievement and parental income.

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Speaker of the House of Keys, Juan Watterson, says student awards are a key gateway to Higher Education, and a lot depends on getting it right first time to make this important transition as smooth as possible.

The Public Accounts Committee would like people to get in touch to talk about their experiences as to how administration of the system can be improved.

They may include comment on the responsiveness of the system, thoughts on grant and loan provision, as well as debt repayment and recommendations for change.

Submissions must be received by the 24th of March to committees@tynwald.org.im
