Success for Douglas at Island in Bloom awards

Douglas has regained the big prize in the Department of Tourism and Leisure's annual Island in Bloom competition.

Last year Ramsey won the trophy, and in the next few weeks its representatives will be travelling to the United Kingdom to find out how they have fared as the Isle of Man's representatives in Britain in Bloom 2009.

However, this time the local judges thought Douglas had put on the best show, and the trophy was presented to parks superintendent Kevin Bott and Councillor Stephen Pitts by the minister, Martyn Quayle.

Having lost out twelve months ago, Mr Bott says there was an extra incentive this time (play audio file):

Other prize winners included best hotel, the Trevelyan; business premises, Kennaugh and Skinner; pub, restaurant and cafe, the Station Hotel, Port Erin; and shopping area, Andreas village.

Ballaugh won both the school prize and the small village section.

The large village award went to Maughold, the small town to Port Erin and the best public building was the Villa Marina.
