Summerland memorial service next month

A memorial to mark the 40th anniversary of the Summerland disaster will be unveiled at the beginning of next month (August).

A service will take place at the Kaye Memorial Garden on Queen's Promenade in Douglas at 7.45pm on August 2.

Fifty people died in 1973 after the leisure complex at the end of Douglas Promenade caught fire.

Mayor of Douglas Carol Malarkey will be in charge of proceedings and the service will be led by the Archdeacon, the Venerable Andrew Brown.

The public is being advised that the Summerhill slip road will be closed to traffic from 7pm to 9pm on the day. Parking will also be suspended on a section of the King Edward Road opposite the Kaye Memorial Garden.

A spectator area has been set aside for use by the public
