Supply teachers being kept on register longer than normal

100 have joined register in last two years

More than 100 supply teachers have joined government's register in the last two years.

In December the Department of Education put out a call for more staff - including retired teachers - to come forward.

It was to help bolster the ranks at a time when many were leaving the profession and there were a high number of staff absences due to Covid-19. 

She was quizzed in the House of Keys by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse.

Minister Julie Edge says an increase of 77 supply teachers since March shows that call has been heard but admits many have been kept on the register longer than normal:
