Surge in unemployment figures since February

IOM Labour Market Report for March 2020 released

There's been a surge in unemployment figures since February this year.

Figures released in government's Labour Market Report for March 2020 show 850 people registered as unemployed last month, in comparison to 461 the month before, raising the unemployment rate for March by 1.1% to 2%.

Following the numbers of people registering as unemployed, the International Labour Organisation estimates 1,445 people in the Isle of Man were unemployed in March, compared with 834 in February - an unemployment rate of 3.4%.

The Job Centre has noted a decrease in job vacancies, with 182 full time positions available and 235 part time.

Business services has the highest rate of unemployment (184), followed by skilled construction (88).

Seventy-eight people are seeking employment in catering and entertainment, 66 in tourist accommodation, 62 in retail, and 58 in unskilled construction work.

Catering and Entertainment has the highest number of job vacancies with 69 availabilities, technical services has 66, medical and health 62, other business services has 40, tourist accommodation 31, and manufacturing 30.
