System proposed for paying UK hospital bills

"Some of what it does might not be popular, but government has got to act in a responsible way".

Those are the words of Liberal Vannin party leader Peter Karran who is proposing an alternative system, which he says could be implemented, after the Reciprocal Health Agreement with the United Kingdom ends in April 2010.

In Tynwald this week, he will suggest a levy could be charged on all passengers leaving the Island, with the money going into a fund which would pay for any treatment needed by Isle of Man residents in hospitals in the UK.

He is anticipating some opposition to the idea, but says it has to be considered:
