Teen told 'stay away from drugs' after being caught with £1.8K of cannabis

19-year-old 'warehouse man' handed 12-month probation order

A teenager from Douglas has been told to ‘stay away from drugs’ after being caught with cannabis worth more than £1800.

Jake Sloane, of Empress Drive, was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse after admitting being unlawfully concerned in the supply of the drug between February and April.

The 19-year-old also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply at his former home on Peel Road.

Police searched his flat on 12 April and found a cardboard box containing 93.8 grams of cannabis bush as well as a set of scales and plastic bags.

Sloane told officers he was storing the drug for someone else to pay off a debt; he was bailed and when he went back to the police station told them he’d like to ‘come clean’.

The teenager went on to tell them he was being used to enforce debts owed to other drug dealers, in a ‘non-violent way’.

The prosecutor told the court that meant, in effect, ‘he was a warehouse man’.

Sloane’s advocate said her client had now stopped taking drugs adding: “He acknowledges the seriousness of these offences. He has been very open and honest in the police investigation.”

Ordering the teen to work with the probation service for 12 months Magistrates told him: “You’re a young man with a good future ahead of you – stay away from trouble, stay away from drugs.”

Sloane was also ordered to pay £125 in prosecution costs.
