Teens in court for breaking lockdown rules

Pair found on the streets of Peel in the early hours

Two 14-year-olds from Douglas reported missing from home during lockdown were found on the streets of Peel in the early hours of the morning, a court’s heard.

The youngsters, who can’t be identified for legal reasons, appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

Both are charged with breaching the Island’s coronavirus regulations under the Emergency Powers Act, but have yet to enter pleas.

The court heard one had been given a 12-week suspended sentence less than a week earlier for dealing class A drugs.

One boy had been living in a care home after his drugs conviction, but absconded on 2 May and was reported missing by staff.

The other youngster had been reported missing by his mother the same day, and a police search eventually found them together in Peel at 2.15am on 3 May.

Both had been warned by police and care workers on a number of occasions about the importance of following the coronavirus rules but had repeatedly breached them.

Mrs Hughes bailed one in the sum of £100 to appear again on 13 May, while the other was remanded in secure accommodation and is next due to appear in court on 12 May.
