Gary Thompson responds on decision to suspend class

The Isle of Man TT Races' Clerk of the Course says this is not the end for sidecars at the event after the class was suspended for the remainder of 2026.

Following a red flag incident on Wednesday (27 May) in three-wheeled practice, race organisers took the decision to halt all sidecar racing activity for the class this year, describing it as a 'precautionary measure' on safety grounds.

Gary Thompson told Radio TT that decision - which was made solely by organisers - was not as a direct result of Wednesday's incident involving defending Sidecar TT champions, Ryan and Callum Crowe.

Rather, he says it's taking into account 'a number of incidents' over the last few years and possible concerns over the 'aerodynamics' on the outfits right now:

Mr Thompson adds a consultation process with sidecar teams on the future of the class will take place going forward.

Following the major update yesterday (28 May), numerous sidecar teams gave their reactions to Manx Radio with a mix of different views.

Some described the decision as 'gutting' and 'devastating' and that it brings the future of the class into doubt.

However, others in three-wheeled racing have supported the call, believing it is the right one to make for the safety of everyone involved.

Separately, a petition has been started to reinstate the class at this year's event and, as of this morning (29 May), has garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.
